Scholarship about Filipinos produced in the U.S. academy has grown exponentially over the past couple of decades. This work has appeared in a wide range of disciplines, including anthropology, critical theory, cultural studies, education, ethnic studies, history, literary studies, psychology, queer studies, sociology, and women’s studies. It has taken up an equally broad range of topics.

Literature in English written by Filipinos extends back to the first decade of the twentieth century shortly after the Philippine-American War (officially 1898-1902) when the United States wrested control of the islands from both Spain and the Filipinos who had fought a revolutionary war against the Spanish at the close of the nineteenth century.
