Traditional Dances
From the indigenous tribes that were influenced by the Indianized kingdoms of Southeast Asia, to the Spanish colonization and the American occupation, the history of the Philippines has always been very complex. This can clearly be seen in our numerous traditional dances.
Dances such as Cariñosa and La Jota reflect the influence the Spanish and Europeans had upon our people.Tinikling and Bangko are dances that showcase the social harmony that is so prevalent in our culture while Singkil and Malong are dances that helps us see the traditions and beliefs of our tribal ancestors.
Each dance is a window into the cultural mosaic of the Philippines. Our goal within the dance committee is to not just teach the steps but the history behind the dances as well. Through teaching our traditional dances we educate our members and spread awareness about Filipino and Filipino-American culture.
