Literature in English written by Filipinos extends back to the first decade of the twentieth century shortly after the Philippine-American War (officially 1898-1902) when the United States wrested control of the islands from both Spain and the Filipinos who had fought a revolutionary war against the Spanish at the close of the nineteenth century. Within a few years of instituting English as the language of colonial education and of sending government-sponsored pensionados to the U.S. for training in higher education, Filipinos began publishing works in English.
As a result of this colonial history and of migration to the U.S. (and to other English-speaking countries around the world), there is no simple way to name the literature. From the perspective of the United States (where this project has its origin), anglophone Filipino literature is typically divided between Philippine literature in English (literature produced by writers in the Philippines) and Filipino American literature (literature produced by Filipinos in the United States). However, there have been writers in the U.S. who have published texts in the Philippines. Conversely, there have been writers based in or associated with the Philippines who have published texts in the U.S. Thus, while the line dividing the two traditions is real, that line has been repeatedly crossed in ways that confound attempts to construct rigid national boundaries.
For no other reason than that it happens to be what I’m most familiar with at the moment, the bibliography currently tilts toward literature produced and published in the U.S. Again, my hope is that contributors will continue to broaden its scope—not only to include Philippine literature in English, but also literature produced by Filipinos across the globe.
